The Single Marine Program (SMP) serves as the voice for single Marines in identifying concerns, developing initiatives, and providing recommendations through advocacy, recreational activities, special events, and community involvement. The SMP is comprised of single Marines who represent their Unit and want to make a difference within their unit and on their installation.  Led by young Marines, the SMP functions to support single Marines’ leisure interests and Quality of Life (QOL) concerns.  A single Marine’s QOL concerns may include activities and issues that directly or indirectly influence personal readiness, morale, living environment, and personal growth and development.   SMP is offered aboard 21 Marine Corps installations and throughout Marine Corps Forces Reserve.  See what SMP is doing on your installation.

Services

SMP Council

The SMP Council, or multiple Councils, are established at each installation to ensure that the needs of single/unaccompanied service members are being met at all unit levels to include the supporting and operational command populations.  The SMP Council provides an advocacy forum for areas of Quality Of Life (QOL), Recreation, and Community Involvement.  It provides information and referral to assist with problem solving at the lowest level. Talk to your local installation SMP Coordinator for more information on how to get involved in the program to make a difference.

Quality of Life Advocacy – Your Voice

What are your Quality of Life concerns? SMP will make sure they’re heard. Whether we’re developing initiatives or organizing special events and recreational activities, your thoughts and opinions affect the outcomes.  A single Marine’s QOL concerns include, but are not limited to, activities and issues that directly or indirectly influence personal readiness, morale, living environment, and personal growth and development.

Community Involvement

SMP supports single/unaccompanied Service members getting involved in the community both on base and in the surrounding community, and we provide opportunities for you to do just that. Learn how to build homes or perfect your skills with Habitat for Humanity, help us keep the local beaches and parks clean, swap stories with veterans, support the American Red Cross through blood drives, or volunteer time at the local animal shelter. The experience is a reward in itself, but you can also qualify for recognition under the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal or receive a Letter of Appreciation for your time.

Every April (National Volunteer Month), Marines across the Corps participate in the Annual SMP Days of Service. Volunteer events are coordinated at the installations based on community needs. Talk to your local installation SMP Coordinator for more information on how to get involved in the program to make a difference.

Recreation Activities, Opportunities, Trips, Etc.

Many fun activities, trips and special events are planned by the local SMP Councils in conjunction with the SMP Coordinator and Senior Enlisted Advisor. These activities and events are geared toward the desires of the single Marines on the installation. Activities may include: Trips to the beach or amusement parks, UFC fights on big screens at the recreation center, pool parties, tournaments, beach volleyball, and barracks bashes are just some of the events organized.

EXAMPLE OF RECREATION ACTIVITY: Barracks Bash - A Barracks Bash is a unit cohesion event that is hosted by the SMP. Barracks Bashes are requested by the Unit SMP Officers to build comradery. During the event, the SMP sponsors a variety of activities for the Marines and Sailors to use for fun, entertainment and education. Such activities can include different MCCS/Semper Fit programs to inform the Marines and Sailors of initiatives and program offerings as well as inflatable boxing rings, jousting rings, rock walls and or dunk tanks, to name a few.  The purpose of the Barracks Bash is to provide an event that is alcohol-free and targeted to the junior enlisted Marines and Sailors who reside in the barracks.  Contact your Unit SMP Officers for more information.

For more information regarding specific installation activities, contact your local Single Marine Program Coordinator.  Coordinators are typically housed in Recreation Centers.

The Single Marine Program (SMP) was established to provide a forum for Marines to identify quality of life ideas and issues along with recommended solutions. After all, change starts from the bottom up. Through participation in the planning and coordination of programs and activities, single Marines have an opportunity to create an enjoyable and rewarding environment for themselves at the Marine Barracks here in Washington D.C.

The Marine Barracks at 8th & I has an established SMP Council that meets at least once a month. The Council is composed of unit representatives from throughout the command as well as the MBW Sergeant Major and SMP Coordinator, The 8th & I SMP also joins forces regularly with the Henderson Hall and Quantico Single Marine Programs to provide an abundance of opportunities for single Marines based in and near Washington, DC.

With the help of motivated Barracks Single Marines, the team works to:

  • Plan events and trips
  • Organize community service projects
  • Resolve quality of life issues
  • Sponsor classes and presentations on topics relevant to single Marines

Activities and events are as diverse as the single Marines themselves. Past SMP activities at 8th and I include:

  • Paintball excursions
  • Trips to big cities
  • Amusement park getaways
  • Sporting events
  • Weekend camping trips

Single Marines also contribute tens of thousands of community service hours each year by participating in:

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Special Olympics
  • Adopt a School
  • Beach cleanups
  • Veterans Homes

Many other local organizations and causes benefit from the time and service contributed by Marines who want to make a difference in their community. By sponsoring barracks bash events, voter registration drives, personal financial management seminars, and healthy lifestyles briefs, the SMP impacts programming on base as well.

Motivated single Marines, a supportive command, and Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) staff provide the foundation for a successful program - what's missing is you! Make a difference, get involved!
